As a child, drawing, painting, and creating art were my favorite things to do. Today, that is still the case. I began my formal art education in Lexington, Kentucky with Dolly Dressman, Susan Cooper, and the awesome Stephen Sawyer. He encouraged students to take atleast one class or workshop every year no matter who skilled they became and it is advice that I still adhere to. My first outdoor painting experience was in Gratz Park with Paul Craycraft, Jr. who provided instruction on the acrylic painting techniques of Henry Faulkner. Henry was well known for his paintings and for the parade he held for his pet goose who died. On the day of the parade, Henry forgot where he put the goose and then was arrested for holding a parade without a permit. Today, his painting of a cat hangs over the bed of Hemmingway at the Hemmingway house in Key West, Florida.
The above photo was taken during a plein air outing at the Foropoulos School of Art in Tarpon Springs, Florida. We did not have great weather that day and one student had his entire easel and canvas blown in the water, another had their canvas slammed to the ground face down, and I had more bugs in my paint than I could count. In spite of the mishaps, I loved the excitement of dealing with the unknowns, feeling the winds, and watching the constantly changing colors.
Currently, I am a member of the Florida West Coast Plein Air Painters, Shadow Chasers Plein Air Painters, Florida Landscape Artists, Pinellas Plein Air Colony (PAC), Gateway Art Gallery and Emporium, Nature Coast Art Leage, and Tarpon Springs Art Associaton.
I share what I have learned with others and will always be thankful to those who made time to share what they knew.
